ASUENE’s AI Research on Climate Data Retrieval Accepted at ClimateNLP 2026, an EMNLP Workshop

ASUENE Inc.’s research paper has been accepted at ClimateNLP 2026, a workshop at EMNLP 2026, a leading international conference on natural language processing. ASUENE will present the paper in Budapest, Hungary, on October 28, 2026.

The study tested a method for locating pages containing evidence for climate disclosures in corporate sustainability reports, demonstrating greater retrieval accuracy than conventional keyword searches.

Research Background

ESRS E1, the climate standard under the European Sustainability Reporting Standards, sets disclosure requirements for greenhouse gas emissions, reduction targets and energy use.

Sustainability reports are lengthy, with structures and headings varying by company. Differences between regulatory terminology and company wording can make relevant information difficult to find through keyword searches.

The study tested a method that accounts for these differences to locate pages containing supporting evidence.

Accepted Research Paper

The study expanded search queries using a lightweight ontology linking ESRS E1 disclosure requirements to related terms, field names and units.

For example, searches for “Scope 2 emissions” also included “purchased electricity emissions,” “market-based” and “location-based,” helping retrieve evidence expressed differently from the standard.

Tests on five companies’ reports increased the share of correct evidence pages or sections retrieved within the top 10 results from approximately 70% to 84%. Gains were particularly strong for target years and distinctions between emissions, carbon credits and removals.

ASUENE will use these findings to advance research into more efficient sustainability data collection and verification, and explore applications in its AI sustainability platform’s disclosure features.

About EMNLP 2026 and ClimateNLP 2026

EMNLP is a leading international conference on natural language processing, organized by SIGDAT, a special interest group of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL).

ClimateNLP 2026 is an affiliated workshop exploring how natural language processing—the computational analysis of human language—can advance climate research and action. Papers are accepted following expert peer review.
