ASUENE Inc. has signed a three-year sustainability partnership with the Tokyo Marathon Foundation.
Under this partnership, ASUENE will support GHG measurement and phased offsetting for the Tokyo Marathon from 2026 to 2028. In 2026, ASUENE will conduct a preliminary carbon footprint assessment of the event to clarify baseline emissions and inform targeted reduction strategies. This initiative underscores the Foundation’s commitment to sustainable event management ahead of the Tokyo Marathon’s 20th anniversary in 2027.
Background of the Partnership
The Tokyo Marathon brings together approximately 39,000 runners from the world, supported by roughly 10,000 volunteers and cheered on by nearly one million spectators. As one of the world’s major 7 marathons, the event serves as a global platform for cultural exchange and urban storytelling through sports.
In recent years, leading international sporting events have begun to standardize the disclosure and reduction of event-related GHG emissions. Environmental responsibility in large-scale sports has become an essential expectation globally.
Guided by its mission, “Changing the future through the joy of running,” the Tokyo Marathon Foundation has set a new goal of establishing a sustainable event management framework. It has prioritized initiatives related to environmental conservation, waste reduction, and DEI (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion) to ensure the event continues to be one that participants and communities can be proud of.
From an environmental standpoint, understanding the impacts of energy use, transportation, procurement, and logistics associated with the event is essential. Recognizing the Tokyo Marathon as a high-impact event with the potential to raise sustainability awareness, the Foundation identified GHG measurement as the critical next step.
ASUENE is a Japan-founded climate-tech company providing ASUENE, Asia’s leading carbon accounting cloud service for GHG measurement, reduction, and reporting. We support decarbonization efforts across corporations, municipalities, and events, both in Japan and globally.
The Tokyo Marathon Foundation recognized ASUENE’s proven track record and global perspective, as well as the shared ambition of “impacting the world from Japan.” Together, we aim to create a marathon that reflects world-class sustainability standards and to communicate the message of “Sports × Sustainability” to audiences internationally.
Over the next three years, ASUENE will quantify all GHG emissions across marathon operations, including logistics, mobility, venue energy use, and material sourcing. This will support both the Foundation’s long-term sustainability goals and the momentum toward the 20th Tokyo Marathon in 2027.
Significance of the Initiative
This initiative positions the Tokyo Marathon not only as a competitive sporting event, but also as a shared platform where runners, spectators, local communities, and companies can collectively engage with environmental responsibility.
For participants and supporters, the event offers a moment to recognize how daily transportation and resource use contribute to climate impact. For companies and municipalities, it provides a high-visibility platform to communicate and accelerate their decarbonization commitments. Together, these efforts aim to inspire a broader social movement connecting the Tokyo Marathon with sustainability.
